Interior Design in Hawaii

The interior of a home should look great and support how you live and interact. An interior designer should not only understand your needs and desires but also how they fit in to current and future design trends. Their job, in short, is to see the big picture and help you balance your design aspirations, functional needs, and budget.

At Home Planning Hawaii, we can connect you to a pro who is dedicated to fulfilling your vision of the perfect space. You can rest easy knowing that your project will be completed properly, with comprehensive architecture services provided as needed, as well as on time and on budget.

Each project includes:

  • An on-site consultation
  • Customized design
  • Procurement and purchasing of materials
  • Planning and space management

Process

All interior design projects begin with a brief and complimentary on-site consultation to discuss the scope of your project. A proposal is generated based on your needs and a 25 percent retainer begins work. The rest of the process looks like this:

Fees

Interior designers charge for their services in two ways: hourly and per project. Clients usually prefer a combination of both; a budget is set and the designer will work until the maximum is reached. If the project exceeds the project fee, due to unforeseen circumstances or project changes, the fee can be continued at an hourly rate or renegotiated.

Initial Meeting

The initial meeting, free of charge, is a chance to meet the individuals who will be involved with your project. This meeting will help you answer the following questions:

  • Did you like the designers you met with?
  • Do you understand the process, costs, and time required to complete your project?
  • Was the firm receptive to your ideas and desires for your project?

Fee Proposal

After the initial meeting your designer will tailor a fee proposal to your particular needs to ensure you that your designer is aware of the scope of your project. The fee proposal is a line‐by‐line itemization of the phases of your project.

Document Existing Conditions

This phase serves as a backbone to the whole design process. Your building and design requirements are detailed and documented (which can even include special furniture or art), functioning as a kind of “before” sketch of your space.  In fact, you’ll receive computer‐generated drawings, called “as‐builts,” that fully describe your existing home.

Programming and Space Planning

Next, your designer will determine the project feasibility by interpreting your wishes and ideas. Your designer will welcome any that helps represent your vision, including photos, magazine clippings, napkin sketches, design ideas, etc.

Selection of Finishes & Materials

After space planning your designer will help you select finishes and materials, making sure they blend well with the existing design of your home and search both in showrooms and on-line to find you exactly what you want.

Construction Documents

Construction documents consist of final drawings and specifications for your project. These drawings are used to permit and build your project, if necessary. Requested specifications, such as product, finish, and quality level are documented here.

Bidding/Permitting

Once you approve the documents, your designer will send out the drawing packages to three contractors to obtain pricing estimates. If permits are required your designer will submit them on your behalf.

The City and County of Honolulu requires all projects over $1000 in value to have a building permit. Your designer will have over 20 years of experience in permitting and includes this service in the fee proposal. Permitting time can range from a few weeks to a few months depending on the complexity of the project. Fees required by the City and County of Honolulu are a factor of construction cost.

Procurement

Based on the approved design, your designer will purchase building and design selections on your behalf. Your designer will be personally committed to finding you the best prices and always pass savings on to you.

Project Management

Installing your design upgrades can be a nerve‐wracking phase for homeowners. To minimize those worries your designer will offer project management  services. Your designer will assist in keeping the project on budget, on time, and maintaining the design intent.

Since residential projects are very personal to the homeowner, having a third party to assist in the details of design installation allows for a much more positive relationship between owner and contractor. From assisting in design modifications in the field, resolving disputes, assisting in price negotiations, or any other of the multitude of issues that arise, your designer will be there to help.
